Position Summary

Ensure that the aquatic operations are in compliance with established departmental policies and procedures. Aquatic Lifeguard is an hourly position, which may be designed full-time, part-time, or as-needed (casual). Under the direction and supervision of the Head Life Guard, the person in this position will observe swimmers, protect life, prevent accidents, enforce regulations, and do related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices particular to the department's administration.

Knowledge of general office principles, practices and procedures.

Ability to ensure compliance with departmental policies and procedures.

Ability to motivate a spirit of unity, loyalty, and helpfulness within and among staff.

Ability to plan and complete work in a manner to ensure compliance with deadlines.

Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public; work cooperatively with others; analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action; and maintain constant observation of an assigned area to identify any signs of danger.

Must be able to read, write, and communicate in English.

Must be able to lift and carry 40lbs.

Must be in good physical and mental health, capable of meeting the demands of the center’s swimming pools.

Have a philosophy of education and child development, which is consistent with that of the Center and The Salvation Army.


Education and Experience


None.


Licenses and Certifications

Possession of current certificates in American Red Cross First Aid or First Aid For Public Safety Personnel (Title22) or above; CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro), and Lifeguard Training. Equivalent training certificates may be accepted.


Physical Requirements

Ability to meet attendance requirements.

Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

Ability to plan work priorities, evaluate work performances and provide recommendations for improving productivity and efficiency of work.

Maintain a variety of internal and external contacts and work cooperatively with superior and subordinate staff.

Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in order to accomplish work in compliance with quality standards and deadlines.

Must be at least 16 years of age.

Must have the ability to swim with proficiency and endurance. Must successfully tread water with a brick for 5 minutes.


Have the ability to work with children, parents, and staff in a capacity of leadership, counseling and education including but not limited to:

a. Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to people of all ages.

b. Sensitivity to individual needs.

c. Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.

d. Dependability.

e. Ability to handle security and crisis situations, calmly.

f. Ability to seek supervision and use it consistently


Working Conditions


Work is performed in an environment where there may be a little physical discomforts associated with changes in temperature, pool chemicals as well as discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt, and the like.
