Job Summary: Employee
Relations Specialists perform a variety of duties to promote employee
welfare, such as resolving human relations problems and promoting employee
health and well-being. They interview
workers and discuss personnel, human relations, and work-related problems
that adversely affect morale, health, and productivity. This position is focused on the resolution
of employee issues, HR communication, staff satisfaction and other related HR
initiatives. This person also
evaluates and resolves human relations, labor relations, and work-related
problems, and meets with management to determine appropriate action.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Consult and effectively manage a range of queries from staff and mangers in relation to terms and conditions and HR policies and practice.
· Performs investigations and handles employee complaints and grievances.
· Researches and explains laws and legal affairs concerning employment to managers, supervisors, and employees.
· Advises and trains managers and supervisors in best employee relations practices and strategies for managing supervisor problems and employee grievances. Develops further training as needed.
· Collaborates with legal counsel and departments in the preparation for and participation in negotiations or investigations.
· Conducts exit interviews for departing employees to ensure that the valid reasons are captured through the process. Summarizes and reports results of surveys, makes recommendations for actions to improve employee relations and well-being.
· Attend unemployment hearings as needed.
· Review and approve end to end corrective action and performance management documents up to and including termination.
· Uses surveys, interviews, and other studies to conduct research regarding human resource policies, compensation, and other employment issues.
· After analyzing relevant information, makes recommendations on changes in an effort to support employee relations and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
· Thorough understanding of dispute resolution and compensation administration.
· Knowledge of federal and state employment laws and regulations, and public sector employment policies and procedures including FMLA, ADA, etc.
· Knowledge of compensation administration principles and procedures.
· Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies.
· Proven experience promoting best practices in diversity and inclusion.
· Excellent oral and written communication skills.
· Strong skills in MS Office suite, e.g. Word,
Excel, Share point, Ability to remain tactful, calm, and persuasive in controversial and/or confrontational situations.
· Bachelor’s degree in Employee Relations, Human Resources or related field required.
· Four years of professional human resource administration, including two years in employee relations
· SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred
· Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
