Transportation Manager
 


Position Overview:

The Transportation Manager provides leadership to team members and direction to the
organization to meet customer goals in support of the company’s policies. They ensure that the transportation team is meeting or exceeding all defined metrics and work with team members to put strategies in place to better metrics if necessary. This is an exempt, supervisory position, reporting directly to the Director of Process and Logistics.

 

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining all company commitments to customer service through timely and efficient deliveries in accordance with all state and federal regulations
  • Supervising all aspects of the product delivery operation and customer relations including the security of products during the process of delivery
  • Negotiating inbound freight with common carriers; ensuring the highest efficiency and profitability of all freight transactions inbound and outbound
  • Providing insight to budget development and performance metric reporting
  • Performing visual daily audit of functional work area (OSHA compliance)
  • Leading and supervising a team of hourly team members within the warehouse
  • Establishing work procedures and shift schedules to meet deadlines as dictated by volume fluctuations
  • Responsible for the overall safety, quality, and performance of the transportation department
  • Responsible for team member selection, training, quarterly reviews, corrective counseling and termination within your area of the Distribution Center
  • Communicating updates on policies, training, and other company information
  • Ensuring the work area is cleaned and maintained by team members
  • Promoting and communicating lean management techniques
  • Committing to the leadership and development of team members while fostering a positive, collaborative work culture
  • Complying with all company and distribution center personnel policies and practices as well as all federal, state, and local standards/requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications, skills, and abilities:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Forklift certification or ability to obtain
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional planning and organization skills
  • Should be highly adaptable, detail-oriented, and able to work autonomously
  • Ability to build relationships and work both collaboratively and independently
  • Ability and desire to problem-solve, prioritize, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and bend, squat, stand, and walk for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work in environments with variable noise levels, lighting conditions, and temperature variation
  • Able to access all areas of building (ascending and descending ladders, stairs safely without limitation)
  • Able to read, understand, and speak basic level of English
    as well as perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, and division

 

Experience/knowledge:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 1–2 years of logistics experience
  • 1–2 years of management experience
  • 3–5 years of experience in a distribution center
  • Basic knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles; Lean Six Sigma Training a plus
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Prior experience operating equipment (pallet jack, forklift, manual carts, scanners, computers, bar code printers, etc.)
