Director / Account Executive, Heavy Specialized
Provides the Heavy Specialized / Platform business development, operational management support and sales support for Landstar Agents, Business Capacity Owners, Regional Field Organization and respective Landstar Departments. Assist in the development and maintenance of information systems, policies, procedures, and training to work together to service the cargo transportation service needs of customers. Ensure that policies and procedures for the company and Landstar Agents are in compliance with Landstar System, Inc. policies, government regulations, security, and any contracts, regulations or bids.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Supervise all activities of the Heavy Specialized Support Services, including business development/region coordinator team, operations team, permit coordinators, rate specialist, and audit function of permit and escort invoices.
Ensure that the company's Operations Policies and Procedures are followed.
Evaluate existing procedures and standards. Devise plans for improvements and assists executive management in development of new/amended policies and procedures. Insure that amendments/new policies and procedures are implemented and monitors success.
Initiate changes designed to improve control and efficiency of department.
Work closely with executive management and with other department directors to ensure maximum cooperation and efficiency between departments.
Foster strong working relationships with Region Team and other Landstar Departments.
Assist in preparing department budget. Monitor revenue goals and actual results on a daily basis.
Directly handle and resolve problem situations that arise with customers, operators, or agents as needed.
Perform the following supervisory duties as needed:
Determine work procedures, prepare work schedules, and expedite work flow.
Issue written and oral instructions.
Assign duties and examine work for exactness, neatness, and conformance to policies and procedures.
Study and standardize procedures to improve efficiency of subordinates within the Heavy Specialized Support Services group in all Landstar companies.
Represent Landstar in developing policy, rules and regulations and sales / networking opportunities through participation with industry professional organizations.
Review and respond as needed to support Heavy Specialized sales opportunities, requests for information, requests for proposal, requests for bid, etc.
Manage, create or modify, the policies and procedures that are distributed to the Landstar Agents and intercompany departments with regards to the requirements of specific customers, as needed.
Manage the compliance of Landstar, Agents, Business Capacity Owners, and other subcontractors for compliance with regulations as determined by customers or in contracts between Landstar and government agencies, contractors, or subcontractors.
Make direct sales calls, when needed, with or without Landstar Agents or other Landstar employees as necessary to identify and evaluate new strategic account business.
Evaluate existing information systems and prioritize the development of system enhancements to the company’s enterprise operating system in order to comply with customers’ needs. Write Work Requests for the Information systems department and participate in the design and testing necessary to meet the needs of customers.
Initiate changes designed to improve control and efficiency of the department, company, Agents, Business Capacity Owners and other Landstar intercompany departments as needed to comply with the needs of customers.
Directly handle and resolve problem situations that arise with customers. BCO’s of truck operators, and Landstar Agents as needed for customer accounts.
Act as department lead in the absence of the Vice President.
Must perform duties to the standards of the job description and comply with the company’s policies, practices, and procedures.
Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Ability to read and review regulations, requests for proposal, contracts, and other applicable documents. Determine the requirements that Landstar, its Agents and BCOs must perform to accomplish the transportation services required.
Must have the ability to manage employees and business relationships within the company with co-workers and customers, and prioritize work according to the flexible needs for our customers.
Must be able to travel up to 50% of the time, or as necessary.
Demonstrated ability to evaluate and improve enterprise computer systems to perform and manage work, especially for cargo transportation systems and customers.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Landstar enterprise system programs, or other programs used by customers to conduct business.
Must have knowledge and/or ability to recognize and close gaps in company rules and regulations, carrier tariffs and rules, all applicable Federal regulations, company safety requirements, and overall policies and procedures of the company and corporation with regards to doing business.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Four year college degree, plus a minimum of 10 years' previous experience in the transportation industry, with 5 years in a similar role preferred. Previous experience managing employees is required.
