Group X - Program Instructor III


Under the direction and supervision of the Program Director, the Program Instructor III will be primarily responsible for providing quality leadership and supervision, in aerobic and/or fitness classes, while maintaining a safe, non-competitive environment for YMCA members.


Ø A high school diploma, or its equivalent, and 3-4 years experience leading group exercise is required.

Ø A minimum of 18 years of age.

Ø Knowledge of basic exercise science, biomechanics principles and fitness class leadership is required.

Ø Ability to successfully demonstrate aerobic choreography.

Ø Verbally provide clear concise directions and visually inspect classroom for safety

Ø Maintain current certifications in CPR AED, First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention and New Employee Orientation or the ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.


Ø Supervise participants during class in order to ensure safety.

Ø Introduce yourself and make efforts to recognize members on subsequent visits.

Ø Develop and maintain relationships that promote the building of small communities.

Ø Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.

Ø Assist in monitoring and improving the cleanliness of the facility.

Ø Be available to class participants both before and after fitness classes to answer questions and follow-up on any questions you cannot answer during class time.

Ø Arrive for shift on time and dressed appropriately following the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis dress code.

Ø Substitute shifts and demonstrate exercises as needed in the Wellness department.

Ø Maintain Continuing Education Credits and other trainings to keep all certifications current.

Ø Provide safe programs and environment for all participants, volunteers and staff.

Ø Conducts self in accordance with the YMCA Mission

Ø Actively participate in the Invest-In-Youth annual campaign.

Ø Attend all staff meetings and training associated with the Aerobics/Wellness Program.

Ø Assist with other projects or activities as needed.


Ø Ability to stand and perform repetitive movements for extended periods of time

Ø Ability to bend at the waist and knees.

Ø Ability to lift 40 pounds and transport equipment

Ø Ability to visually inspect equipment and complete preventative maintenance checklist as required.

Ø Ability to communicate effectively with participants, staff and volunteers

Ø Ability to demonstrate and lead activities

Ø Ability to solve problems/address participant concerns and use sound judgment even when distracted by noise and activity.

Ø Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.

Ø Ability to physically and mentally respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.


Ø Be informed and up to date on the latest developments in your field.

Ø Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.

Ø Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.

Ø Recommend participation in a variety of YMCA programs.

Ø Support our YMCA annual campaign by inviting members to participate.

Ø Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.

Ø Be informed about volunteer opportunities.

Ø Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.


1. Evidence of maintenance and/or increased attendance of assigned classes.

2. Achievement of positive member feedback as indicated by verbal comments and through written program evaluations.

3. The knowledge of aerobic/fitness class content and progression and the quality training techniques.

4. Individuals have learned new skills and have had their life enriched through the exercise experience.

5. Evidence of knowledge of membership By Design, building small communities within the sports department

6. Creation of a safe and nurturing environment for program participants, members, volunteers and staff.

7. A strong mission-driven Health/Wellness Program with a clear commitment to character development and the four core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
