Materials R&D Engineer

As a Materials R&D Engineer, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory and be part of a diverse team developing new materials for automotive and aerospace applications. Our mission is to push the frontiers of materials, structures and devices, with current projects spanning from formulating new materials for additive manufacturing and hypersonic vehicles to improving soft and hard magnetic materials for electric motors. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative Engineer to grow within our group.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Support the entire development cycle for new materials including transition and commercialization. Typical tasks for this job include new concept brainstorming, modeling and simulation (Matlab, CAD), fabrication of parts by 3D printing or other methods, microscopy and characterization, tensile testing with load frames, as well as data analysis. With more experience, the candidate can take on responsibilities including: writing patents, journal publications and proposals, and managing research projects.


EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
The candidate should have experience with planning, conducting and analyzing experiments. Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing equipment and techniques is a plus. Prior experience with post-processing methods including heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, and sintering is a plus. Familiarity with materials characterization techniques (e.g. metallographic polishing, microscopy) and testing is also a plus. In addition, the candidate should have creative problem solving skills and the ability to work effectively on a team as well as independently.

KNOWLEDGE DESIRED:

Knowledge of the basic principles of materials is required. Prior programming background (e.g. Python) or experience in computer aided design (CAD) is a plus. Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are required.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform work while wearing a powered or unpowered air purifying respirator. Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Have visual and hearing acuity, manual dexterity and good verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (e.g. driver’s license special tools or restrictions): U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status required.


This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
