Materials Informatics Scientist

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The Materials and Microsystems Lab is looking for a self-driven candidate in the broad area of informatics and data analytics as applied to the material science discipline. The candidate will lead the application of computation methods to materials discovery, materials design, thermal management, process optimization and manufacturing quality control. The candidate will work within an interdisciplinary research group focused on advances in materials for additive manufacturing, hypersonics, electric motors and high-temperature structures.
As Scientist IV, you will be expected to write research proposals, patent applications and journal publications, and present ideas and results in technical presentations. You will be collaborating closely with the group’s experts in additive manufacturing and high temperature materials and act as an intermediary to HRL’s Information and Systems Sciences Laboratory. With more experience, you should grow into the role of an expert who proposes and manages new research programs. Experience applying machine learning to materials discovery and/or process optimization and control.
Experience modeling materials and/or structures
Experience with advanced statistical analysis of experimental results.
Demonstrated ability to solve industrially relevant problems is a plus.
Experience planning and running experiments is a plus.
Background in computational materials discovery is a plus.
Experience with writing government proposals is a plus.
Knowledge of materials science and/or inorganic chemistry.
Knowledge of common machine learning frameworks (e.g. Keras, Tensorflow, Pytorch)
Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python.
Knowledge of CAD (e.g. Solidworks) and FEA (e.g. Abaqus) is desirable.
Knowledge of Molecular Dynamics (MD), CALPHAD, or phase field modeling is a plus.
Broad interest in innovation that addresses over-the-horizon automotive and aerospace problems is encouraged.
The candidate should have a record of innovation and scientific achievement evidenced by multiple strong publications.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment.
Ph.D. in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Applied Math, or related field.
