Chief Texas Political Reporter
The Austin American-Statesman is hiring a Chief Texas Political Reporter to cover Texas government and politics with an emphasis on accountability reporting.
The reporter will be responsible for covering the governor and helping to lead a team of reporters covering the Legislature, state agencies, elected officials and appellate courts, with an eye toward watchdog, accountability journalism. The ideal candidate is a journalist with a heart for public service and an interest in the intersection of power and money in politics. We seek a passionate, accurate storyteller who is great at sourcing, a reporter with an eye for detail who dislikes jargon and exposes sham.
The reporter will be part of a team that will serve Austin and all of Gannett's statewide newsrooms, a network of daily and community sites, with comprehensive political reporting of impact.
The ideal candidate would have at least five years of reporting experience, including in political reporting. They would have a proven track record of explanatory and investigative reporting and be skilled at networking, building trust and getting to yes when government says, "no." Fluency in Spanish is ideal.
This person will collaborate with the State Politics/Education Editor in shaping coverage of Texas government and politics.
