General statement of job:
With limited supervision, the reporter must be responsible for covering beat-related stories in and around Greater Lafayette, Indiana, as they happen or after the fact. Reporter must also develop feature stories as they arise, seeking out opportunities constantly.
Essential job duties:

Maintain a close working relationship with beat-related sources.
Be on alert for breaking news.
Carry a cell phone accessible by coworkers and editors.
Generate story ideas and photo opportunities.
Complete writing duties as assigned by the editor, deputy editor, city editor and/or copy desk editor.
Maintain professional communications with other employees and contacts outside the newspaper.
Be willing to work nights and weekends as needed to fulfill job duties.
Write clearly and succinctly on a variety of topics, which may extend beyond the primary focus of law enforcement.
Participate in training as required.
Accept other assignments as deemed necessary by editor(s).
Education: Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field.
Equipment: Computer literate with a working knowledge of MS Word. Knowledge of Quark a plus.
Skills: Must be self-motivated, independent, excel in communications with people inside and outside the company, be able to generate story ideas but also follow instructions for assigned story ideas.
Ability to speak and write in Spanish a plus.
Certificates, licenses, insurance needed:
Over 18 years of age.
Valid driver’s license.
Automotive insurance coverage as deemed necessary by human resources.
