Education Reporter @ Austin American-Statesman
The Austin American-Statesman — the award-winning daily newspaper in Austin, Texas, and part of the USA TODAY Network — is looking for a reporter to cover K-12 education. The education reporter would focus on Austin-area school districts but also would cover state education policy as it affects fast-growing Central Texas. We are looking for an experienced journalist to write in-depth, watchdog stories on the social, economic and academic impacts of local and state school policies.
Roughly 2.2 million people live in the Austin metro area, where employers including the University of Texas, Google, Apple, Dell, Samsung and, recently, Tesla are driving the economic engine in Texas' heart. Meeting the demand for college-ready graduates to satisfy local workforce needs is among the many challenges Central Texas school districts face. The Statesman K-12 education reporter will join a dynamic team that thinks big picture, identifying and developing unique must-read enterprise.
The beat demands strong organizational skills, sourcing and news judgment. The ideal candidate knows their way around data, is social media savvy and enjoys beating the competition on breaking news as much as they are excited by turning engaging enterprise. Candidates should have prior education reporting experience. Bachelor's degree preferred. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
