The Austin American-Statesman -- the award-winning daily newspaper in Austin, Texas -- is looking for an experienced reporter to join its local politics team.

This is a high-impact beat, as it is responsible for ongoing coverage of local politics and public policy of high-interest to Austin taxpayers and readers, including the Austin mayor's office, City Council and other local agencies. Good candidates have shown they can see through government spin, develop sourcing to scoop the competition and write in-depth reports that hold agencies accountable to the public.

Roughly 2.2 million people live in the fast-growing Austin metro area, where employers including the University of Texas, Google, Amazon, National Instruments, Samsung and, recently, Tesla are driving the economic engine in Texas' heart. The American-Statesman is looking for a reporter to join the Economy and Growth team staying on top of how the city manages and encourages that growth, telling the stories of those getting ahead, as well as those left behind. The job requires thorough daily beat reporting and coverage of ongoing city issues, but it also demands consistent enterprise, watchdog and investigative reporting. The government of the largely liberal capital city of Texas is often at odds with the state's mostly conservative Legislature -- battles that often play out in the digital arena -- so strong social media skills are a must.

This should not be your first rodeo. Applicants should have a few years experience in covering city or state government and in investigative reporting. Bachelor's degree preferred. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.

Application Instructions:

When applying, please include a single document, preferably in PDF format, with a brief cover letter, resume with references, and a few samples of your work.

The application will only allow one document upload. Providing these combined materials will ensure that you receive the highest consideration.
