USA TODAY is seeking a night editor to oversee breaking and trending news and features editing across its Life vertical. We're looking for an editor who can react quickly to breaking news and won’t hesitate to jump in to write a story, send an alert or pick up the phone to call police and publicists as needed.


Successful candidates are accustomed to handling a high volume of content and should be comfortable with best practices of SEO, digital publishing and metrics. You’ll need to possess strong editing skills, impeccable news judgement and a familiarity with trending stories. We’re on the lookout for someone who can sense what the next big story will be. This is a fast-paced job, which requires urgency to get news out quickly (and update as needed) while also adding context. This job requires excellent news judgment and fact-checking skills, and will also include curation, editing and reporting as needed.

The ideal candidate should have experience with news teams operating on a 24-7 cycle. A passion for and expertise in entertainment is essential as is the ability to work 4 p.m. to midnight eastern time, including Sundays.


Responsibilities include:

  • Assigning and editing breaking or in-the-moment news.

  • Assisting day editors with edits on non-breaking stories.

  • Writing stories as needed.

  • Optimizing all the content you edit as well as your own stories, paying special attention to headlines, SEO and optimization for social media.

  • Spotting high-interest items ahead of the competition and using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social media channels to discover, source and distribute coverage.

  • Upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity and credibility.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or any other subject in a liberal arts field from an accredited institution

  • Experience covering entertainment in a fast-paced environment

  • Impeccable editing skills and news judgement

  • Demonstrated strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity

  • Proficiency in digital publishing, digital metrics and SEO best practices
