IndyStar, part of the Gannett Inc. and the USA TODAY NETWORK, is looking for a resourceful, motivated public safety and breaking news reporter to join our award-winning newsroom. Indianapolis has experienced multiple years of record criminal homicide levels, despite city and community-led efforts to stem the violence. This reporter should be able to excel in a variety of roles, from reporting quickly and accurately from a scene to thoughtfully building sources. This reporter should be able to effectively write for audiences on mobile devices, know their away around social media and be able to collaborate across teams. In addition to daily news, this reporter will develop enterprise projects and should not be afraid to bring big ideas to the table.


  • Be a curious, assertive and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news with urgency.

  • Break stories quickly and accurately. Adept at balancing the needs of getting a confirmed story up now and adding detail and nuance.

  • Develop and maintain sources in neighborhoods and at local public safety organizations.

  • Quickly head to the scene of breaking news and develop sources in the community.

  • Request, understand and interpret public records to tell human stories.

  • Partner with other metro and investigative reporters to cover the police department, including but not limited to police shootings, SWAT standoffs, potential misdeeds and big announcements.

  • Work with other breaking news and criminal justice reporters daily to monitor filings and other major developments.

  • Find and report follow-up stories that go beyond crime briefs to foster empathy, action and understanding.

  • Harness social media, messaging platforms and tools like Nexis to uncover stories and contact families members, victims and suspects.

  • Optimize stories for target audience groups using SEO and metrics information.


  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • At least three years of reporting experience at a news outlet.

  • Prior experience as a beat reporter, including a track record of impactful accountability and sophisticated issue reporting.

  • Experience working with a police scanner and police record systems.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to take photos and record video/audio in the field.

  • Solid news judgment and adherence to journalism ethics.

  • Ability to work nights and evenings as required.

  • Dedication to fairness and accuracy, as well as a commitment to report with compassion and sensitivity.
