South Carolina College Athletics Recruiting Reporter

The Greenville News/greenvilleonline.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking an independent, enterprising reporter to cover college athletics recruiting in the state of South Carolina.

The quality of recruiting in South Carolina has risen in the eyes of sports fans because of the in-state talent that rises to the Division I level, and because of the rise of Clemson football and the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry right here in SC. The state annually ranks in the Top 15 for the number of FBS signees, and Clemson University has become one of the top football programs in the nation.

This reporter will not only cover recruiting in South Carolina but will also assist with covering Clemson football on an as-needed basis, especially during the season.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a strong knowledge and understanding of high school and college athletics and the recruiting process.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills that will help him or her build a strong source network of coaches, athletes and other influential people in the recruiting world.
  • Be unafraid to ask difficult questions and find the answers, even if they are not readily apparent.
  • Have a knowledge of how to break news in a fast-paced digital news environment as well as the ability to develop strong enterprise reporting on recruiting.
  • Have some experience covering high school or college athletics in a digital-first environment.

Greenville is a metro area of about 1 million people in the Upstate of South Carolina. It is halfway between Atlanta and Charlotte and about 45 minutes away from Clemson University. We’re a half hour from the Blue Ridge Mountains, and three hours from the Atlantic Coast.

Greenville’s home to one of the most vibrant downtowns in the Southeast with a great nightlife on the weekends and is home to a Class A affiliate for the Boston Red Sox. Its population is becoming younger and increasingly diverse as the high-tech manufacturing industries in the area draw young professionals from around the country.

  • Provides great customer service, helping readers find answers and solutions.

  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen and background check.

We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don’t limit your upload to a resume; show us what you’ve done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:

1.     Your resume – one to two pages.
