SUMMARY

The Principal Engineer is responsible for providing expert architectural guidance to a broad cross-functional software engineering organization tasked with delivering market-leading products. This position interacts with all levels of the organization, influencing technical direction, mentoring others to higher levels of achievement, and identifying technical opportunities that will accelerate and improve our results. Strong interpersonal skills, expert technical knowledge, and good judgement are essential to your success in this role.

 

JOB DUTIES

  • Work with Product Management and Executive Team leaders to understand market and customer problems and provide them with technical guidance on applicable solutions.
  • Help multiple agile Product Development teams to align their implementation choices to a cohesive and robust architectural strategy for our platform and its applications.
  • Mentor Software Architects and others in Engineering to help them achieve high performance in software development, and as leaders.
  • Research leading edge and emerging technologies to identify those which have the greatest potential to improve our efficiency and results and help our team to plan and transition towards them.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or PhD in computer science or other STEM subject.
  • 5 or more years experience as a Software Architect, Principal Engineer, or similar role working within an Engineering organization of at least 25 people.
  • Experience implementing highly-scalable commercial web applications.
  • Expert knowledge of agile practices, including XP, Scrum, and Lean along with the ability to teach robust agile to others.
  • Fluency in software design patterns, and architectural patterns for reliability and scale.
  • Full stack knowledge inclusive of microservices, containers and container orchestration, database technologies, message queues, cloud-native, mobile, and front-end UI frameworks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. An ability to tailor material for both technical and non-technical audiences. Comfortable speaking to small and large groups. Low drama. Contagious enthusiasm.
  • Strong technical curiosity and a passion for collaborating with others to try new things.
  • Willingness to pair and write code as needed, design architecture collaboratively at the whiteboard, or embed yourself within an agile Development team for an occasional sprint to ensure a strong start to the trickiest work.
  • Ability to self-direct, manage time and priorities, and sustain focus on achieving results.
  • Familiarity working within a Microsoft ecosystem including experience with .NET/C# and Azure Cloud infrastructure strongly desired.

  • Engineering, Programming and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services. Writing computer programs for various purposes. Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes. Identifying measures or indicators of system performance and the actions needed to improve or correct performance, relative to the goals of the system. Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, stories and models.
  • Leadership — Ability to effectively engage, influence and motivate a team through positive example, development and communication.  The ability to delegate responsibility and work to others and coach them to develop their capabilities, provide feedback, share information, manage performance, set goals, motivate team and address performance problems.

  • Normal office working conditions. Work requires regular sitting/standing at a desk, working with a computer. Job may require hours that exceed 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week during peak periods.
