Floyd Press a weekly syndication of the Bristol Herald Courier is seeking a Newsroom Editor
JOB SUMMARY: This role serves as the news content editor for both the print and the electronic products, including story planning, assignments and coordinating packages and
presentations with other sections of the newsroom, including photography, feature, sports and copy desk. This is a management role, and all reporters will directly report to the city editor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Lead a weekly or biweekly planning meetings with reporting staff – focusing on both print and web content plans; this meeting will include invitations to other editors so that packaging and art planning can occur earlier in the process. As part of this, the Newsroom editor will keep our ongoing planning documents (white board and electronic budget) up to date.
Maintain a long-term planning budget of events and stories and things to be followed.
Regarding web content, the Newsroom editor will have chief responsibility for the main page and the news pages under it, ensuring that those pages have fresh content regularly, and noting issues that should be brought to the attention of the digital content coordinator and the editor.
Responsible for the business pages in print and on the web.
Responsible for using social media and other efforts as discussed with the editor to promote the news content, including handling one or more electronic newsletters.
Handle and sort email coming from aide staff and the firstname.lastname@example.org
Edit letters to the editor for use on the opinion page.
Edit all locally produced copy from the news reporting team.
Deal with the public when they arrive at the front desk in the mornings, or handle phone traffic in the mornings.
Call freelancers and assign stories when needed; ensure that freelance invoices are handled in a timely manner. Edit all freelance stories assigned.
Lead daily budget meeting, including conversations regarding print and web packaging.
Edit breaking news stories; and lead the breaking news process with reporters when it happens (weekends included); goal is to ensure that breaking news is handled according to our audience growth strategies, chiefly with a web-first priority.
Work with reporters earlier in the process on a story to ensure that photo and graphic ideas are developed and shared with appropriate editors well before the story deadline, particularly on long-term and Sunday packages.
Send budgets every evening to the coop of Tennessee newspapers that are also sending us their budgets; when desired coordinate with those newspapers to use stories and photos they produce in our newspaper. (Happens much less often.)
Serve as a liaison with other
Help to coordinate the recruitment and guidance of newsroom staff, including reporters and interns.
Will meet with the editor on a bi-weekly basis to update, plan and discuss special projects for which the city editor will have chief responsibility, including but not limited to special tabs, database projects and special story packages.
Will participate in weekly editors meetings that involve both story planning and content for the opinion page; expectation is that the city editor will contribute ideas and content for the opinion page as well as for department wide projects.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
This role requires competence in leadership, news judgment, organizational skills and the operations and platform for both print and electronic production.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree preferred but relevant experience also considered.
