GENERAL COUNSEL

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre is seeking an experienced, highly engaged attorney to serve as our General Counsel reporting to our Executive Director.

POSITION SUMMARY

The General Counsel (GC) serves as the principal legal officer for Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation (Ailey) and provides legal advice and counsel to the Executive Director, the Senior Leadership Team, the Board of Trustees, and other members of the Ailey community on a broad and diverse range of legal matters, while maintaining knowledge of the organization’s operations and legal matters. The GC supports the work of the multi-faceted, diversified, and complex legal affairs of Ailey and is a member of the senior leadership team.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITES

• Provide legal and regulatory guidance on the broad range of the organization’s activities and concerns, including nonprofit governance and corporate matters, deal structures and strategies, risk management, contracts, transactional matters, dispute resolution, and policy formulation.
• Anticipate and identify legal issues and counsel officers of the Company and other upper management, advise on legal strategies and solutions, often in situations of great political, public relations, or financial risk or significance, and with limited time for assessing alternatives.
• Review, research, interpret and provides advice and recommendations on a wide variety of legal issues.
• Draft, review, and approve policies and procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other legal documents.
• Review contracts, leases, and other legal documents; research legal issues and recommends revision as necessary.
• Represent or oversee the representation of the Company and upper management in judicial and administrative proceedings and in negotiations with other state agencies.
• Maintain efficient and effective relationships with outside counsel on litigation and other organizational matters.
• Promote an environment that supports diversity, equity and inclusion that reflects the Alvin Ailey’s Dance Theatre’s mission, vision, values and brand.
• Keep abreast of new laws, regulations, guidelines, and industry trends affecting our business and identify any necessary changes to our compliance program and/or business operations.
• Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Juris Doctorate with Admission to the New York State Bar.
• At least ten years of legal experience
• Strong drafting, communication, negotiation, litigation, creative thinking, interpersonal, management and judgment skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of in-house colleagues and external business vendor partners.
• Broad knowledge of federal and state labor and employment laws and regulations preferred.
• Candidates with experience providing legal services to in theatre, cultural or non-profit organizations is preferred.

COMPENSATION - 200K-235K. Including Health/dental insurance, flexible spending account, 403(b) retirement plan, and commuter benefits.
