I. Job Summary:
This position reports to the Accounting Manager – Leasing and Technical Accounting, and is primarily responsible for performing accounting for lease contracts in accordance with ASC 842 as well as associated Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO) in accordance with ASC 410. The position also assists the manager with technical accounting issues on an ad hoc basis as needed.
II. Duties and Responsibilities:
a. Review new lease contracts and modifications to existing contracts and, in consultation with the manager, identify all elements that need to be recognized and measured in accordance with ASC 842.
b. Ensure that new lease contracts and modifications to existing contracts are properly set up in the lease accounting software platform as well as ARO accounting platform.
c. Prepare and review monthly account reconciliations.
d. Prepare and review journal entries.
e. Prepare variance analysis and communicate conclusions to management.
f. Prepare and provide supporting documentation with adequate explanation to internal and external auditors in a timely manner to support their audits.
g. Support the development and filing of SEC documents, 10K and 10Q, including preparation of lease information required to be disclosed under ASC 842.
h. Assist with other technical accounting issues as needed
i. Observes company safety procedures at all times.
j. Stewardship of the brand to include embodiment of the Shentel Way by ensuring appropriate use of the brand (name, logo, company, appearance, and attitude) within their respective team and organization.
a. Support and continuously document changes to the Sarbanes Oxley controls to support the preparation of the books and safeguarding of assets.
b. Ensure that proper records are retained such that testing of compliance with Sarbanes Oxley controls is quick and complete.
c. Recommend and identify process improvements.
d. Special projects as assigned.
e. Responsible for following, supporting, and enforcing all internal control processes and procedures.
III. Qualification Requirements:
a. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required, CPA preferred
b. Experience Level: 3+ years of experience in Accounting, either in public or corporate accounting. ASC 842 or ASC 410 experience is preferred but not required. Experience researching technical accounting issues in general is helpful but not required.
c. Licenses or Certifications: CPA or eligibility to sit for CPA exam preferred
IV. Knowledge of:
a. Working knowledge of all aspects of the accounting field included Sarbanes-Oxley, financial reporting, and audit. Proficient with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of Accounting. Must have a certain degree of creativity and latitude. High level of computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
b. Skills: Ability to prioritize and complete tasks in a fast-paced environment, pay attention to details, and strong analytical skills. Relies on judgment and experience to plan and accomplish goals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
